Het Kleine Krikhaar
Geesteren

In the village of Geesteren, Overijssel, a striking barn-style home has been added to the landscape. Designed by Dennis Weerink, project architect at Reitsema & partners—and also the homeowner—this long, minimalist residence is clad entirely in Platowood Spruce. Both the façade and roof are finished with Weathered, contributing to the home’s refined yet natural aesthetic. Beyond its appearance, the house was built with sustainability in mind, which was a key reason for selecting Platowood’s environmentally friendly timber.

Please note: this project was completed with an outdated version of the Weathered Color Oil finish. Curious about our new colours? Order a free sample!

Architect Dennis Weerink:

“I chose Platowood because I really like the look of the wood, and I’m drawn to its sustainable character. We opted for the Weathered finish because we wanted to achieve a uniform greying.

We applied the pre-greying ourselves using the recommended materials. We also installed the boards ourselves on every surface—floors, walls, and roof—paying great attention to aligning nails and joints. All corners are mitred, which creates a very clean and abstract look, fitting the architectural concept.”

A nod to the former barn

From the first time Dennis visited his in-laws in Geesteren, he had his eye on an old agricultural barn across the road. Thanks to the “Rood voor Rood” policy of the Province of Overijssel, he was allowed to demolish the old barn and build his own home in its place. The result is an elongated barn-style residence, designed with abstract precision both from a distance and up close. The home is named after the old farmhouse that once stood on the property: Het Kleine Krikhaar.
