Private residence
Ghent, Belgium

Depending on how the light hits the façade, this home in Ghent (Belgium) takes on a different appearance throughout the day. Platowood Spruce cladding, with a Burned finish, is installed on the façade in 45° angled panels. This gives the exterior a playful character and creates a striking reflection of light.

The house was designed by DURV architecten & ontwerpers, a Ghent-based architecture firm that focuses on sustainable design and the use of bio-ecological materials.

Please note: this project was completed with an outdated version of the Burned finish. Curious about our new colours? Order a free sample!

Architect Elisabeth Blontrock:

“The environmentally friendly Burned finish gives the spruce wood a deep, dark tone while preserving the visibility of the knots and grain. By placing the wooden panels in varying directions, we created a playful effect, enhanced by the way light reflects. What we later discovered is that the knots reflect light differently than the rest of the wood. This adds an even more distinctive effect.”

Wood inside and out

Not only is the façade entirely clad in wood—the entire structural framework of the house is also made of wood. The interior ceilings are finished with spruce as well, visually extending the exterior spruce wood indoors.
