Circularity

Circularity In a world where sustainability is very important, circular building takes center stage. Circularity means reusing materials, creating a closed loop with no waste. As a producer of sustainable wood, Platowood places great value on sustainability and circularity.

What is circular building?

Circular building is part of a circular economy. It is a form of sustainable construction in which as many reusable materials as possible are used and there is minimal waste and pollution. Attention is also given to how materials can be applied in such a way that they can easily be reused.

At Platowood, we strive for circularity in every part of our company. We start with the choice of sustainably managed wood from responsibly managed forests. A limited amount is harvested, after which new and young trees grow that absorb CO₂ again.

All the wood we platonise is used. Parts of Platowood Fraké that are too short to be used as façade cladding are used for Platowood frame wood. We do this by finger-jointing and laminating short lengths. This process creates strong beams from which frames and doors can be made.

Circular wood

To stimulate the reuse of wood, we work together with circular partner CirQ Wood. They have extensive knowledge of wood and a broad network in the circular economy, including circular demolition companies. CirQ Wood supplies reclaimed wood, meaning reused wood from harvesting projects and production residues.

The Fraké slats we use for stacking wood in our production process are also reused. This residual stream is turned into a high-quality product by Collectief Soepel and Stadsmijn Achterhoek.

By using all of the wood, CO₂ remains stored and we produce very little waste. Lengths that are too short for frame wood or platonised wood that is not suitable for one of our applications are processed into fine chips. These are then used to produce pellets for pellet stoves.
