Sustainable As a producer of sustainable wood, Platowood attaches great importance to sustainability and circularity. We set the bar high and strive to be pioneering at every stage of our process: from responsible forest management to energy-efficient production, and from smart use of our residual flows to the long lifespan of our wood species.

Wood from responsibly managed forests

Platowood works exclusively with wood from responsibly managed, certified forests (FSC®, PEFC™ or OLB). This means that no more trees are felled than are replanted, and biodiversity is preserved. Moreover, wood is a renewable resource that stores CO₂ throughout its entire lifespan.

Local production

Since 2002, Platowood has been based at Cleantech Park Arnhem. Here, companies, educational institutions, research organizations, and governments work together on clean technology: products, services, and processes that reduce environmental impact. Fire-retardant treatments and colour finishes are also carried out by local partners, helping us to minimize transport distances.

Chemical-free production process

Platonising takes place entirely without chemical additives. Instead, we use steam, water, and heat. The result is sustainable wood without environmentally harmful residues — unique within the wood industry.

Renewable energy

Platowood’s production process runs entirely on residual heat from Veolia’s heating plant at Cleantech Park Arnhem. In addition, 4,441 solar panels on the roofs provide all the electricity needed for our annual operations.

Residual flows

At Platowood, not a single piece of wood goes to waste. Residual flows left over after platonising – such as shorter sections and saw residues – are given a second life in our own window frames and other products. This way, we make optimal use of the wood and close the loop, without compromising on quality or appearance.

Long lifespan

Through platonising, the natural properties of the wood are enhanced and the sugars – which serve as a breeding ground for fungi – are broken down. As a result, Platowood’s wood has a lifespan of at least 25 years. Our three wood species originally have durability class 5, which improves to class 1–2 after platonising.

We are proud of the excellent scores Platowood achieves in the Dutch National Environmental Database.

All Platowood wood types are listed in the National Environmental Database (NMD) with outstanding scores. Platowood wood performs 5 to 25 times better than alternative materials in the exterior finishes category. For example, a façade made of Platowood Fraké has an environmental cost indicator of only €0.43 per m².
